On February 23-24th, Southern Illinois University hosted the 2024 zone 8 meeting in Carbondale, IL. The agenda of the meeting was as follows:
Friday, February 23
• Mid-day to Evening arrival
7-9 pm – Dinner
8-9 pm – Astronomy Observations
Saturday, February 24
• 9:00 am – Registration and Poster setup, breakfast provided
• 9:30 am – Poster Presentations; "Helical Weaves" - Workshop by Duston Wetzel
• 10:30 am – Keynote Talk, Dr. Corinne Brevik
Solar Eclipses: Amazing Opportunities for Science and Public Outreach
• 11:30 am – Lunch
• 12:00 pm – APS Format Oral Presentations
• 2:00 pm – Workshop: How to do solar viewing for the public
• 2:45 pm – Workshop: Examples of hands-on solar activities to do with kids
• 3:30 pm – Guided planning time for chapters to develop eclipse-event plans (optional)
• 4:15 pm – Conference closes
The chapters that attended were Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, East Tennessee State University, University of Tennessee Knoxville, and Austin Peay State University. There were 24 attendees.
Only individuals from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale gave research presentations.
Advice for future zone meeting planning is to start early! When a lot of people are involved in the planning even the smallest hiccup can delay things.
