Mayia Vranas is currently serving her first term as AZC for Zone 18. She recently graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor's in physics, and will be attending graduate school in the fall. She has been extensively involved with UC Berkeley's chapter of SPS, serving as vice president for two years and president for one. In this position, she worked to organize events and meetings that would help provide needed resources to undergraduates in physics, foster a diverse and inclusive environment in the department, and allow students to reach out to and work with local communities. Mayia is passionate about diversity in STEM and ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment for all students. She is excited for the opportunity to interact and work with more SPS chapters as Zone 18's AZC.
Beyond SPS, Mayia has been involved with condensed matter experimental research in quantum materials at UC Berkeley for the last four years. Last summer, she worked as a research assistant at UC San Diego as a UC LEADS fellow. This semester, she is continuing research in a post-baccalaureate position at UC Berkeley. Additionally, she is working as a student coordinator in the Cal NERDS office, which is dedicated to promoting diversity in STEM through a number of fellowship programs, workshops, and outreach projects. When not doing physics, Mayia enjoys cooking, and can be found cooking for her house of 60 people at the Berkeley Student Cooperative.
