Jose Lopez

Dr. Jose Lopez earned his B.S. in Physics with a minor in Biology at Saint Peter’s University and earned both his M.S. in Physics and Ph.D. in Physics at the Stevens Institute of Technology. He is currently an Associate Professor of Physics at Seton Hall University, the founder and director of the Laboratory of Electrophysics & Atmospheric Plasmas, and the Associate Editor of the European Physical Journal D (EPJD). Throughout Dr. Lopez’s time in the physics community he has made an impact in a variety of areas, earning awards such as the 2011 Hispanic Heritage Plaque of Appreciation, the 2007 Medal of Honor for Research Excellence and Plaque of Appreciation, the National Science Foundation Travel Grant in both 2004 and 2005, and even being named on the Top 20 Brainiest People in New Jersey list. Dr. Lopez served as the Zone Councilor for SPS Zone 3 from 2011-2017.

In addition to these achievements, Dr. Lopez frequently contributes to the science community through his regular appearances as a Science Expert/ Correspondent to Broadcast Mass Media since 2012, including organizations such as Fox News, WJR-AM, Ebru Today, CNBC.com and Fresh Outlook. Though he regularly applies himself to the multiple publications, conferences, workshops, and classes he teaches, Jose finds a way to provide his “unconditional guidance and advice” to his SPS Chapter members. His encouragement as an advisor toward supporting underrepresented minorities, such as having his SPS Chapter attend the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics and the Conference of the Society of Black Physicists, is a large reason why he is described as having “inspired countless students to engage in projects as early as their freshman year”. His continued devotion of time, energy, and passion he places into his role as an SPS Advisor and to the science community is the reason why he is known as an “exceptional advisor”.
