SPS Outstanding Chapter Advisor
Saint Joseph's University
Dr. Mark Scafonas is currently an assistant professor at Gwynedd Mercy University. Holds a B.S. in physics from Saint Joseph’s University (SJU), and a M.S. in Applied and Engineering Physics and a Ph.D. in Climate Dynamics, both from George Mason University. His research interests are the large-scale dynamics of the atmosphere under the conditions of anthropogenic climate change. Prior to his current position, he was the Physics Lab Coordinator at SJU, where he served as the SJU SPS chapter’s advisor starting in 2019 until his departure at the end of Spring, 2022.
During his time as SPS advisor, the chapter was recognized as an Outstanding Chapter for its outreach efforts to the University community, developing student leadership, and presenting student research at PhysCon 2019. He encouraged student leadership to find projects that they are passionate about, including helping with the community garden that donates the produce it grows to local local organizations and the university food pantry.
